Our First Garden

I have always wanted to have a garden and we finally have a house with enough land to start one.  John made a really nice raised garden out of cedar wood.  We filled the bed with a mix of  "Black Kow" composte manure and garden soil.

What's in the Garden?

We planted two tomato plants.  One tomato plant is the beefsteak variety and the other is the big boy variety.  We added basil, rosemary, lavender, romaine lettuce, and a sweet pepper plant.  I also planted sugar snap peas, radishes, and cucumber from seed.  My mother in-law told me that marigolds can help deter plant eating pests, so I added a few for good measure.  As a novice at gardening, I need all the advice I can get.

It has been an unusual spring this year in East Tennessee.  We had unseasonably warm weather in March and early April, then it turned unusually cold  in late April.  I covered the garden with a cotton sheet the nights we had freeze/frost warnings.  Most of  the plants survived unscathed, but I did lose one romaine lettuce plant and some marigolds.

The radishes in the foreground are growing really fast.  I think they are a bit overcrowded, so we will see how it turns out.

Flowers on the tomato plants hopefully means red ripe tomatos will be coming soon

Here are my sugar snap peas.  It is amazing that just a few weeks ago I planted these seeds.

I am working on buidling a trellis for the sugar snap peas to grow on.  I plan to wrap twine around the two cedar posts.

I will add more posts as the season goes on. Hopefully, I will have some nice veggies to share picttures of soon.
